Was Jesus buried? A Major Issue For Modern Christianity:

The argument goes: Peasants and people who were crucified were not buried in a tomb. Thus, it is argued, it is implausible to think that Jesus was buried. Scholars John Dominic Crossan, Marcus Borg, and others advance this argument.

The Hypothetical Shroud of Caiaphas, a "CSI: Ancient Jerusalem" - A Forensic Science Mystery

Marcus Borg, biblical scholar and Jesus Seminar Fellow speaking about Jesus being buried in a tomb said:

"But surely the reason that didn’t happen amongst other reasons is that Jesus was a peasant and secondary burial in an ossuary simply didn’t happen for peasants."

However, there is non-biblical evidence that argue against this historical picture:

  • The discovery of a crucifixion victim, named Johanan ben Ha-galgol, found near Jerusalem. His remains were found in an ossuary.
  • The recently discovered ossuary of James the Just, the brother of Jesus. If this is authentic, we have evidence of a peasant who was reburied in a ossuary.
  • That on-again, off-again, now on-again Shroud of Turin. Now that the date determined by carbon 14 radiocarbon dating can no longer be considered reliable, and may even point to the 1st century, what are we to make of this artifact? Is it possible archeological evidence that the Jesus of history was buried in a tomb? Does this change the whole picture of Jesus' history?

We now know from new news in 2004, from the peer-reviewed, scientific Journal of Optics of the Institute of Physics in London, in a news release from National Geographic and from a recent republication of a juried article in Melanoidins, a Chemistry Journal of the European Communities, that whatever we may believe, the Shroud of Turin is poignantly contrary to the expectations of believers and skeptics alike. It is auspiciously not too miraculous for modern sensibilities or modern Christianity.
